Final reflection

I feel that the most important technology I have learned to use this semester is the creation of a website. Knowing how to do this is going to be greating for setting up a classroom and putting missed assignments on it so that students can make up their work. It will also be of use to parents because they can find out how to contact me. To engage the students in active learning I can create a wiki for my class. This way all of my students can collaborate on the "big" questions that I will ask them at the beginning of each semester.

copyright assingment

I have posted a video about the War of 1812. As far as I can tell it is not done by a teacher or a student for educational purposes so it does not fall under the fair use program. So I will now examine it for copyright infringments or things they did well. First off no music was used so he was alright there. His video contained him narrating during a display of pictures. The pictures were well placed and I do not think they all came from the same place. Of course, I do not know this because he did not put any credits to site where the pictures came from or to artists credit for their work. This is the only infringment I could find in the video.

Copyright assignment

This is an assessment of the video that I posted concerning the revolutionary war. The description that came with the video said that the kid did it for an English class so that would put it under the fair use agreement. But assuming that it isn't under the fair use agreement the maker did a good job with not infringing on many copyright infractions. First off, the little Paul Revere video at the first did not last more than 3 minutes so it is okay. However, the maker did not site where this video clip was attained. The other video from "The Patriot" that played throughout was sited and it also did not last for longer than 3 minutes. The biggest problem I saw was with the music. The songs did last longer than 30 secs. They were sited. The pictures used also needed to be sited at the end of the clip.

copyright laws

I have tried to embed at least 10 videos from teachertube and non of them will do it so I have given up and I'm just writing the critiques.
The first video were pictures put music about revolutionary war soldiers. It was a very entertaining video but the the audio clip lasted for like 2 and a half minutes instead of 30 seconds. Maybe they got the music from one of the free sites. Also, all of the photos seemed to have appeared to come from the same photographer but the movie made no mention of who took them.
The second video I watched was very well done. It was similiar to the first one but it had pictures with video about the civil war. the pictures were very interesting and they were also sighted as to where they came from. However, the same sang went for more than 30 seconds so hopefully they got it from a free sight or had permission.

Interview with my mom

I chose to talk to my mom about the internet safety articles. I actually just barely got off the phone with her. She is 56 years old and a High School speech teacher. I talked with her about how much kids use the internet. Our talk went very well. She can see in her classroom how much technology is affecting her students. From cell phones to ipods. We also talked a little bit about the problem that "sexting" is becoming among the youth. It is because of the internet and texting that when you make a mistake like taking an inappropriate picture of yourself and sending it to someone it is a mistake that you have to live with for the rest of your life. All in all our talk went very well.
As I was watching the videos a few things came to my mind in reflection. It is true that today the real world and the virtual world of the internet are coming together like never before. I really don't like being on the computer but as a teacher it is important to know how kids communicate online. I was also fascinated by the movie clip about identiy theft. There are many times that I give away too much online when I shouldn't. I also have some passwords on my cell phone that I need to get rid of.
While reading the articles it was nice to see how a personal blog can be used as a good missionary tool. I think that the internet provides wonderful opportunities to share the gospel.
This video does have music that goes with it but Youtube would not allow the audio for some reason. Pictures well formed and put to music have a far greater impression on minds than just pictures in my opinion. I learned a lot about propaganda posters just by doing this activity. I think students will also learn like did by doing a topic in video form. I would make sure to set up specific guidlines for the video and leave adequate time for the students to learn which ever moviemaker they are going to be using.

While viewing the competition videos I was impressed with the presentation about the class wiki that can be used with history students. Technology is a valuable tool that can be used to help students really connect with the past. This presentation was well thought out and and it creatively displayed how a class wiki can be used. In the classroom I think that using this type of technology for teaching does have a down side that goes along with the benefits. In my opinion it is important that the students already know how to use this technology before they get to your class. Using things like moviemaker can be difficult for some students to learn. I can see having to spend a lot of time during class explaining how to use technology instead of actually teaching history. It is possible that most of the students will come to class already familiar with the technology they are going to be using. But, depending on the school and its economic demographic there could be a lot of students who are not familiar with the the technology. If the students can be taught so that they understand it this class wiki will be a great tool in the classroom. It is just another way to get outside the textbook and lecture help the students really get involved in history.

Learning technology

I have not had a lot of experience with technology and and I'm hoping to improve on my skills. I think technology can be an invaluable tool when it comes to teaching. I want to be a good teacher so learning about teachnology and how to use it will be invaluable. That is what I want to get out of this class.

Ring shopping

I am currently looking for an engagement ring and think I have decided on one that is at Sierra West jewelers. I will provide the link so you can look at rings if you want to.sierra-west.com

Reasons for the extras that I have on my blog

I chose to put the newsreel widget on because I love the news and learning about current events. I put my favorite websites on because I think that gives people a better sense of who I am. It is not to hard to figure out through my websites that I love sports!

About me

My name is Cole Curtis Nelson. I am from a small town that is in the mountains of southern Idaho. I grew up on a cattle ranch and loved it. I was raised in a medium size family with four sisters and no brothers. I am the second to the youngest with my oldest two sisters being twins. During high school I was very involved in sports. My particular interersts were in basketball and track. In fact, my college minor is p.e. teaching and coaching. I would love to someday be a high school basketball coach. My college major is history teaching. I love history and have a particular interest in early American history. My future plans are to graduate from college and return to Burley, Idaho to teach high school history and work on the family cattle ranch.
